Railway steamy day for Editor

I had a fabulous day yesterday as the guest of Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society, owners of Clan Line, on Surrey Hills train from London Victoria via Guildford, water stop at Shalford, Redhill and back to Victoria. Almost four hours of great Southern steam. Interesting route out via London suburbs and back via circuitous route. Fast running between Woking and Guildford to fit in with four-an-hour service trains - max 72.9mph recorded. Loved the look on the faces of evening rush hour commuters as we steamed back through East Croydon and other stations in south London. Varied from excitement to 'you see them every day' attitude. Thanks to MNLPS for the trip. Travelled in the support coach so behind the engine all the way. Those Bulleid Pacifics chatter along like no other mainline loco. Absolutely brilliant!  BG
